Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) – May, 2017

The All-India CPI-IW for May, 2017 increased by 1 point and pegged at 278 (two hundred and seventy eight). On 1-month percentage change, it increased by (+) 0.36 per cent between April, 2017 and May, 2017 when compared with the increase of (+) 1.48 per cent between the same two months a year ago.

The maximum upward pressure to the change in current index came from Food group contributing (+) 0.74 percentage points to the total change. At item level, Rice, Groundnut Oil, Eggs (Hen), Fish Fresh, Poultry (Chicken), Milk, Pure Ghee, Chillies Green, Onion, Beans, Brinjal, Cabbage, Carrot, French Beans, Green Coriander Leaves, Methi, Palak, Potato, Radish, Banana, Tea (Readymade), Sugar, Bus Fare, etc. are responsible for the increase in index. However, this increase was checked by Wheat, Wheat Atta, Arhar Dal, Mustard Oil, Chillies Dry, Garlic, Lady’s Finger, Parwal, Tomato, Torai, Mango (Ripe), Flower/Flower Garlands, etc., putting downward pressure on the index.

The year-on-year inflation measured by monthly CPI-IW stood at 1.09 per cent for May, 2017 as compared to 2.21 per cent for the previous month and 6.59 per cent during the corresponding month of the previous year. Similarly, the Food inflation stood at (-) 1.63 per cent against 0.67 per cent of the previous month and 8.48 per cent during the corresponding month of the previous year.

At centre level, Salem reported the maximum increase of 6 points followed by Belgaum, Madurai and Faridabad (5 points each) and Tripura, Kodarma, Ernakulam, Mysore, Nasik and Coonoor (4 points each). Among others, 3 points increase was observed in 6 centres, 2 points in 14 centres and 1 point in 13 centres. On the contrary, Amritsar, Raniganj and Ludhiana recorded maximum decrease of 3 points each followed by 2 points decrease in Varanasi. Among others, 1 point decrease was observed in 15 centres. Rest of the 16 centres’ indices remained stationary.

The indices of 32 centres are above All-India Index and other 45 centres’ indices are below national average. The index of Chhindwara centre remained at par with All-India Index.

The next issue of CPI-IW for the month of June, 2017 will be released on Monday, 31st July, 2017. The same will also be available on the office website www.labourbureaunew.gov.in.
